With Arizona, Apple introduces the first driver's license and state ID in Wallet.

Arizona is the first state to make its driver’s license and state ID available in Wallet, according to Apple. Arizona residents can now add their driver’s license or state ID to Wallet and show it smoothly and securely at various TSA security checkpoints in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport by tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, Jennifer Bailey said: “We’re thrilled to bring the first driver’s license and state ID in Wallet to Arizona today, and provide Arizonans with an easy, secure, and private way to present their ID when traveling, through just a tap of their iPhone or Apple Watch. We look forward to working with many more states and the TSA to bring IDs in Wallet to users across the US”.

Soon, more states will be able to use Wallet to store their driver’s licenses and state IDs. Along with the seven states Apple already stated, Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio, and the territory of Puerto Rico plan to make this functionality available to its inhabitants.

Once added to Wallet, customers may simply touch their iPhone or Apple Watch at the identification scanner to submit their driver’s license or state ID to the TSA at participating airport security checkpoints. Users will be able to see which information the TSA is requesting on their iPhone or Apple Watch, and can consent to submit it with Face ID or Touch ID without having to unlock their phone or display their ID card. Users do not need to display or hand over their smartphone to present their ID because all information is shared digitally. For verification purposes, the TSA will also take a picture of the traveler.

Driver’s license and state ID in Wallet takes full advantage of the privacy and security features built into iPhone and Apple Watch, and provides advantages that a traditional ID card cannot. Unlike actual ID cards, Wallet’s driver’s license and state ID only display the information required for the interaction, and the user has the option to examine and authorize the necessary information before it is provided. Additionally, with Wallet, the user’s driver’s license and state ID are presented digitally via encrypted communication directly between the smartphone and the identification scanner, eliminating the need for the user to show or hand over their device.

Biometric authentication using Face ID and Touch ID helps ensure that only the person who added the ID to the device can view or present their ID or license in Wallet. If users lose their iPhone or Apple Watch, they can use the Find My app to easily lock their device and help locate it, or remotely erase their device.

On iPhone 8 and later running iOS 15.4, as well as Apple Watch Series 4 and later running watchOS 8.4 or later, you can save your driver’s license and state ID in Wallet. Driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet are presently accepted at TSA checkpoints in a few states. TSA checkpoint signage should be consulted to ensure availability.
